This information is an ongoing summary from Dr. Sax's book, Boys Adrift, the five factors driving the growing epidemic of unmotivated boys and underachieving young men. In this issue, we will discuss endocrine disruptors which are also known as environmental estrogens due to the idea that they may inhibit the development of testosterone and therefore delay puberty in boys.
This was also recently reported on a network news program, there are chemicals in clear plastic bottles that are leaching this into our bodies. It is called Polythylene Terephthalate (PET). As the bottles get warm, for example, while being transported, more of this chemical is leaching into the liquid. This is also accelerated by the acids within the liquid (soda) itself.
Some additional sources are bottled water, pacifiers, baby bottles, soda bottles, etc. These can disrupt the brain areas involved in memory and motivation. There have been links to ADHD, laziness and can also lead to overweight according to Dr. Sax. The reason for the overweight issue is the effect on the adipose (fat) cells by causing a disruption on the endocrine feedback loops. It is currently being researched that it is taking place in the pituitary and hypothalamus.
Additional research has also shown this may be leading to brittle bones in boys as well. Relatively minor falls have created fractures. This amount of fractures has doubled between the 1960's through the 1990's.
What are some of the solutions to this issue? Use glass containers more, avoid plastics that have been microwaved and filtered water vs. plastic bottles of water. The main challenge to the release of the chemicals is heat and the acidic nature within the plastic bottles. By cutting down and avoiding these with our young boys, you will help decrease the chances of disrupting their very important endocrine systems.
Although teens and young adult mentoring is a passion of mine, I have recently been adding another skillset that I am very excited about! It is learning from a person who is considered the world's top marketer and joint venture/strategic alliance trainer. What this means to you is the unique possibility of helping you get much more out of your career or business. If you are at all entrepreneurial (and our economy is further dictating this entrepreneurial movement with the downsizing of corporations and business going overseas), you may want to speak with me on how this training could positively impact you, your life and those of your loved ones. At this time, I am setting up no-cost, no-obligation consultations on a first call, first serve basis.
The idea behind this is two-fold. First of all, assist some of you who would like to learn some incredible marketing skills. This would also help me further refine these skills so I can create more value for more people in their lives and career. Here's the best part: Even if this does not fit where you currently are in your life and career, if you know someone who this could help and you refer them and we work together, I will be paying you for the referral! The amount of compensation for a good lead would start at $50.00 and could go way up from there! Put on your thinking caps and please keep this in mind. I don't know anyone who would refuse "found money!"
